WINNER Description: Everyday parents sign their children up for sports. Sometimes, it could be hard to keep everything on track which could cause parents to be late or entirely miss games. But my app, TeamUP, fixes this very easily. It requires very little setup and it's very easy to use! You could sign up and find sport teams that are nearby. When you have joined a sports team you will automatically be given the schedule for the team along with options to sign up to bring snacks to the game, view the roster, or cheer the team on through the app. The app also features a built-in map and notifier to assist you in getting to your games on time! TeamUP will be successful because it will help millions of parents and players manage game schedules with ease and no hassle. TeamUP will also be a popular app to use because it spreads positivity by allowing players and parents to send messages of encouragement to the team before a big game. |
2ND PLACE Description: Sometimes, students wish they had different lunch options at their school. Some students have food allergies and wish they could ask for ingredients to be removed from a meal. I created the "Food for Thought" app so that students can voice their opinion about the school lunches. With the "Food for Thought" app, students can view what will be served for lunch daily to help students decide if they want to pack their own lunch or eat at school. Students can also hit a like button or dislike button on a lunch item to notify their school about their opinion on a lunch meal. The "Food for Thought" app also lets students write comments and suggestions about their school lunches. "Food for Thought" will be a great tool for students and school staff because it provides students with a platform to voice their opinion and create change. |

WINNER Description: Every week, I get tested for COVID-19 at my school, Evergreen Ave Elementary. I created the Evergreen ALERT app to help parents from my school stay up to date with their child's health. The Evergreen ALERT app allows parents to monitor their child's weekly COVID-19 test results, report COVID-19 exposure, see when the next COVID-19 test will take place, and how many COVID-19 cases are at my school. I also created a resource page in my app so that parents can learn how to take care of their child if he/she is exposed to COVID-19 or where to find free masks, hand sanitizers or COVID-19 testing nearby. My app will be successful with parents because it provides useful resources to parents and lets them easily monitor their child's health and COVID-19 cases at school. |
2ND PLACE (tie) Description: I designed the Bonded Sisters app for girls, ages 8-12 who want to feel confident, empowered and supported by their female friends. When you log into my app, it immediately greets you with a daily inspirational quote that motivates you to stay positive. It also allows you to set daily goals that help you become a confident leader. You can also send uplifting messages to your "Sister Circle" also known as your female friends. I also wanted to design an affirmations page so that girls can learn to speak positively about themselves. The Bonded Sisters app will be successful because it creates a community of strong and positive females who are supporting each other to achieve their very best. |
2ND PLACE (tie) Description: Many students at school can feel lonely because they don’t have friends that share similar interests. With my app, INteResTS , students can connect with other students that share similar hobbies. When students first download the app, they will answer a simple and short questionnaire asking them about their hobbies and likes/dislikes. The app will then match them with other students from their school that share similar interests. The target audience is students that are 10-15 years-old. INteResTS app will be successful because it’ll help students make new friends at school and give students an opportunity to learn more about their classmates or other students. |
The Variety Boys’ and Girls’ Club in Boyle Heights proudly announced that two of their Club members from the NATO of CA/NV Digital Media Center won awards in the national Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA) contest. The Lenovo-sponsored App Lab Competition awarded a total of 9 grants in three age categories - 8-10, 11-13, and 14-18. Winning submissions addressed an issue faced by their community. This is the second year in a row that the Boyle Heights Club in East Los Angeles has won the national contest for the work being produced in the NATO of CA/NV Digital Media Center. The winners, Bianca C and Alexander G, are both 12 years old. They have been active participants in the programming offered in the NATO of CA/NV Digital Media Center, Alexander for almost three years and Bianca for over one year. They both have grown to love graphic design. Members wanted to create an App to showcase their skills and solve a problem that their community was facing; out of a large field Bianca and Alexander came up with award winning concepts and designs. When asked how he felt to receive this honor Alexander said, “To win a national contest, it feels amazing! Thanks to the help of Ms. Lulu, I was able to succeed.” Bianca replied “It feels amazing to have won the BGCA National Contest and I have no words to express how happy I am. This is the first contest that I have ever won. I am grateful to Ms. Lulu for being an amazing Media Center teacher.” The Club’s Executive Director, Patricia Siqueiros expressed her appreciation to NATO of CA/NV with these words, “THANK you for your continuous investment in our Club and especially its members. Project Title: APPRECIATE. APP Description: I created Appreciate. app for students, ages 7-17 to recognize their blessings and focus on the positive. As a student, I know at times school can be difficult and stressful. With the Appreciate. app, it helps kids reflect daily on the positive things that he/she may have such as food, shelter, and the Variety Boys & Girls Club. At the club, I have been journaling for 4 months and I have seen a positive difference in my attitude and appreciation for my family, friends, food, and the club. I am confident that Appreciate. app will be successful because daily gratitude journaling will help kids stay positive and grateful for all the big and little things in life. |
Project Title: Fête App Description: Due to the pandemic, I designed an app called Fête. I created this app for people of all ages to celebrate special occasions with friends and family virtually and safely from home. While using the Fête app, you can create a virtual party by choosing the theme, color scheme, background, guest list, and invite. You can also send invitations through text or email and monitor who will be attending your virtual party. Additionally, you can chat with other participants and play built-in games or partake in various activities during your celebration. Fête app will be successful because individuals of all ages enjoy celebrating holidays, birthdays, graduations and special occasions and with my app, everyone can celebrate safely from home. |

App Name: City Planters App Description: I live in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, a city of apartments, houses, and businesses. There are very little trees, flowers or parks in my neighborhood. With my app, "City Planters," club members, community members, and parents can download the app and sign up to help plant trees and flowers in the neighborhood. "City Planters" will help the city become more beautiful and safer for children to play outside. "City Planters" will also help the environment because more trees will be growing in big neighborhoods. With the "City Planters" app, you can also find upcoming dates on the next tree planting event. You will also be able to donate supplies like dirt, trees, seeds, and flowers. "City Planters" app will also locate areas in the community that need trees and show photos of all the work City Planters have completed. My app will be successful because community members, club members, and parents want more green areas for play time. The "City Planters" app will also be successful because people want to breathe cleaner air. |
App Name: A Variety Boys & Girls Club App Description: I created an app for the Variety Boys & Girls Club because parents and club members can keep up to date with events at the club. As a member of the club, many events and field trips take place throughout the year. Members and parents are informed about events through flyers or phone calls. With the "Variety Boys & Girls Club" app members and parents can see a calendar of events and field trips, reducing the amount of paper being used. The "Variety Boys & Girls Club" app will also show department schedules so that members can choose what classes they would like to sign up for. Parents and members can also learn more about the classes and staff members through the app. The app will also let parents sign permission slips for field trips, making it easier on the parent and child. I know my friends and I lose our field trip slips often, but with the app, I can have my parents fill out the form directly on their phone. Parents can also enroll their child through the "Variety Boys and Girls Club" app. This app will be successful with members, parents and staff because it allows everyone to stay up to date with events. Flyers and announcements will no longer be necessary with the app saving a lot of paper and reducing waste. The app will also allow members to explore different departments and classes easily. Parents and members can also see a gallery of photos of field trips, events, and projects posted on the app. |
