Many would say that we are more than what we have experienced in the past. That our lives are destined, and memories are nothing but memories and our lives are predetermined. Others say that we are essentially a summation of our past experiences. The beautiful and perplexing film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'' perfectly introduces both philosophies through a tragic love story between a man and a woman. The movie's protagonist, Joel (Jim Carrey) desperately tries to forget his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) through intensive brain surgery. As the film presents him reliving their relationship, he desperately tries to hold onto the erasing memories and falls in love with her all over again. The film not only reflects the heartbreaking truths to love, but it also makes you question the fascinating concept of the human brain.

After watching this perpetuating film for the first time, it took days to internalize the complexity of its foundation. To this day, every time I watch the film there are tears left in my eyes. Between the constant change in time and setting, and deep contrasts of light and tone, the film is one to watch more than once.

Watching it on a big screen would fully enhance the movie's surreal message through its psychological undertone. Furthermore, the change in setting can be confusing at times because of its intellectual essence. As it begins in the dark, rainy town of Montauk, New York, it travels through metaphorical beaches, houses that fall apart right in front of Joel's eyes, and even retraces memories from his early childhood. Not only does this movie tug at every one of my heartstrings, but it has the ability to make a severe emotional impact on anyone who is lucky enough to watch it. From every line spoken, to the melancholy motif that plays throughout the movie, Eternal sunshine is one of a kind.

Witnessing this liberating work of art on a device or television would simply not convey the intricate details sewed into the motion picture. It suggests the subconscious impact that both happy and sad memories have on our psyche. It unfolds the theme of never truly forgetting someone you love. And finally, Eternal Sunshine reveals the everlasting question of philosophy: Does fate exist?
