Behind the Curtains Banner

How many years have you worked in the Movie Theatre Industry and how did you first become involved?
I have been with Century Theatres/Cinemark for 16 and a half years. I applied for an Usher position for the opening of the Century Theatres in Pleasant Hill, CA and got hired on the spot. Since then I have worked at 7 different locations and have encountered many unforgettable experiences.

What’s the best part of your Job? Do you have any memorable experiences that you would like to share?
The best part of my job is working and helping different people everyday. Over the past 16 years I have been blessed to have had so many encounters with tremendous subordinates, supervisors and leaders who have had a positive impact on my career. That combined with helping to make a guests day by providing the best seat in town cannot be matched by any other profession.

My most memorable experience occurred very early in my career as a General Manager at the Century Theatres in Danville, CA. It was during the opening of one of the Harry Potter movies, where I was able to play a midnight pre-show on all 7 of my screens at one time. I will never forget the excitement and the loud cheers that was displayed by the crowd that evening as the feature cued and the opening scene came on screen.

What is your fondest movie theatre memory?
My friends and I planned a group trip to attend the opening of Star Wars Episode II back in 2002. We all got permission slips from our parents to skip last period of class to attend an early afternoon showing. We had bought our tickets a month in advance, and we all had been waiting for this day since Episode I came out 3 years prior. I will never forget the excitement I felt knowing we got to ditch school to watch our favorite movie series. With our light sabers in one hand and popcorn in the other, we felt like we were on top of the world.

How old were you when you went to your first movie?
Do you remember the theatre and the city?

It was 1987; I was 3 years old when my family took me to watch Jaws 4: The Revenge. I remember it like it was yesterday. I cried throughout the whole movie. Luckily I was not too traumatized!

What is your favorite movie of all time? What is it about this movie that stands out for you?
In recent memory, I would have to pick Wolf of Wall Street. Watching my favorite actor Leonardo DiCaprio perfect his role as Jordan Belfort was a work of art. The Matthew McConaughey cameo was one of my favorite parts too, as I sometimes pound my chest and make humming noises as a way to motivate my employees.

Do you have any industry related hobbies or experiences? Please explain.
I bought a movie pass so I can check out different theatres in Southern California. I drag my wife and we sometimes drive an hour to watch a movie just so I can see what my competitors are doing. I like to arrive early and do a walk-through of all areas that are accessible. I make it a point to try the popcorn and snacks at all theatres.

Do you have any special interests that you would like to share?
I enjoy working out daily, and I’m addicted to the show Shark Tank. I try to watch re-runs every day when I get home from work. In terms of hobbies, I like to read, ride my bike and spend time with my wife and two cats. I’m also proud to say I’m a two time Fantasy Football league champion.

What does being a member of NATO of CA/NV mean to you?
I’m honored and flattered to be part of NATO of California/Nevada. What NATO does to bring all competitors under one roof during their seminars is great for our industry, as we have the opportunity to pick each other’s brain and find ways to improve our profession.

Of all the resources that the Association offers (seminars, scholarships, email advisories, etc.) which is most useful for you?
The seminars and scholarship programs are the most useful for me. I’m a big fan of the scholarship program, because it rewards our employees for their dedication and perseverance, as it is not easy to work and attend school.
