Behind the Curtains Banner

How many years have you worked in the Movie Theatre Industry and how did you first become involved?
I have worked in the Movie Theatre Industry for 18 years. My family relocated to the Sierra Foothills from the Bay Area in search of a more affordable, enjoyable and satisfying lifestyle. A friend of the family told me about a redevelopment project in downtown Sacramento that included an IMAX Theatre. It sounded like a fun job to do while I decided what my next career move would be… Well here we are 18 years later!

What’s the best part of your Job?
As far as the job pertaining to my personal life, the flexibility of my position and IMAX Corporation has enabled me to participate in the lives of my kids while they were growing up and ultimately that was the main reason we moved to the area.

Do you have any memorable experiences that you would like to share?
In addition to my position as Theatre Director, I work on special projects for IMAX Corporation. Because of those special projects, my job has taken me to Seoul, Korea; Guatemala; Columbia; Mexico and over 100 theatres in North America. I currently have the privilege of working on our new IMAX VR initiative in addition to running the Esquire IMAX Theatre and I just spent 6 weeks in New York City.

What is your fondest movie theatre memory?
When I was 12 years old my family was visiting friends in Huntington Beach. The father operated a movie theatre and we were the first people allowed into the movie theatre for the opening of "Star Wars." I remember that special feeling and have always enjoyed providing that same special feeling to our guests when they visit the Theatre. I really enjoy occasions when I have special guests and can take them to the projection booth and through the special VIP entrance to the theatre.

How old were you when you went to your first movie? Do you remember the theatre and the city?
I seem to remember seeing "Sleeping Beauty" at 4 or 5 years old and having re-occurring nightmares about Maleficent and the dragon… I believe it was when my father was stationed at Offutt AFB in Bellevue, Nebraska and we saw it in Omaha, NE.

What is your favorite movie of all time? What is it about this movie that stands out for you?
It’s embarrassing but I’d have to say My favorite single film is “The Last of the Mohicans.” My favorite series of films would have to be “The Lord of The Rings Trilogy” and “The Hobbit.” I am a fan of that pre-revolution era in our nation’s history. It has great battle scenes, the drive for human survival, and the bad guy gets his Butt Kicked at the end! And the Hobbit was the first Novel that was ever read to me in 3rd grade. I enjoyed seeing all the characters come to life exactly how I had envisioned them in my mind.

Do you have any industry related hobbies or experiences? Please explain.
I have a pretty nice collection of IMAX film frames encased in Acrylic. In the past when an IMAX Documentary film was released, some of the distributors would give each theatre that contracted the film a commemorative 15/70 film frame encased in Acrylic.

Do you have any special interests that you would like to share?
My personal passion is snowboarding…In El Dorado Hills we are an hour away from world class resorts in Lake Tahoe and I go every chance I get. My family would kill me if I did not say that we are Disney enthusiasts… Pin collectors, DVC members and fans of all things Disney.

What does being a member of NATO of CA/NV mean to you?
I have always tried to involve myself in local professional organizations and boards. I enjoy being involved and helping to implement change for the better. Although being a member is extremely important, I am never satisfied just being a member. I am looking forward to eventually applying for a NATO Board position and being more involved in this industry.

Of all the resources that the Association offers (seminars, scholarships, email advisories, etc.) which is most useful for you?
In my day-to-day managing of the theatre I appreciate the email advisories… they are definitely my #1 source for keeping up on all federal and local regulations that have an impact on our business. In my personal life, the scholarship program has helped my family with the huge financial burden of college expenses. My first two kids have each been awarded scholarships and I have one more kid that will be competing next year as a college freshman.
